Keeping our best buddies safe in Autumn

Autumn is beautiful and it’s here . . . but with a new season come new risks for our dogs.

Let’s keep them safe by being aware of the potential dangers out there.

1. Mushrooms

Mushrooms . . . danger!

Dogs, especially puppies, are very curious and if they find something that looks edible - such as a mushroom - they might take a bite. Although dogs can eat the majority of mushrooms in the UK, this does not mean that they should. Not only that, there are certain mushrooms which are toxic to dogs.

Contact your vet immediately if you discover your dog has eaten a mushroom.

2. Acorns and conkers

Both these are poisonous to dogs if they are chewed and swallowed. As well as being poisonous, they can cause blockages in your dog's stomach leading to serious problems and discomfort.

Also beech nuts/cob nuts are toxic if eaten in any quantity.

Basically…best to keep away from all nuts!

Same as mushrooms: if you suspect your dog of eating an acorn or conker, or any other nuts in Quantity, we advise to immediately contact your vet.

3. Piles of fallen leaves

Fallen leaves . . . the ultimate snuffle mat…fun, but take care

Once leaves have fallen from the trees, they will start to decay. These piles of leaves can be huge fun, but be aware . . . they can be dangerous since they develop mould and bacteria, which are harmful to your dog.

If leaves are eaten, they can cause gastrointestinal upsets, so care should be taken..

4. Seasonal canine illness

Poorly puppy

Although this is relatively rare, it commonly occurs during the Autumn. Unfortunately, seasonal canine illnesses can be fatal because symptoms can rapidly become severe.

More information

It is essential to contact your vet or emergency veterinary clinic to seek treatment. Please be aware that if you do not seek treatment for your dog, it can lead to dehydration and death.

5. Fallen fruit

Fallen fruit . . . keep away!

Fallen fruit will start to ferment on the ground producing a natural alcoholic substance. If eaten by your dog, it can cause diarrhoea and sickness.

Autumn is a beautiful season, but has its dangers like other times of year. Be aware, stay alert and keep your dogs safe and healthy.
